Creative small business owners fascinate me. Leah, for instance, knows a lot about skincare. And she's passionate about making all natural body butters, soaps and perfumes free of animal byproducts. But it's the magic of putting it all together to create Melati (Indonesian for jasmine), her business, that intrigues - and thrills - me most.
Happy Birthday to the United States of America! :)
In the late 1980s I left home during a difficult time. Eventually I found refuge at Covenant House, a haven for runaways. While it was only a few days, I won't forget the generosity I received. That little bird in hand logo of theirs was my beacon of hope. Today, I contribute what I can to their cause and next month it will be my great honor to give the staff at Covenant House a Made in Brooklyn Tour.
When I officially began Made in Brooklyn Tours I made a commitment to provide memorable, positive and inspirational experiences to guests from around the world. This year Made in Brooklyn Tours has received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. And now my little business has qualified for the Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame. Thank you tour-goers for your praise and support. And thanks to who's makin' it in Brooklyn for makin' Brooklyn THE place to be! - Dom Gervasi, Owner & Producer
Did you know that "you must have a license to guide or direct people to any place or point of public interest or to describe, explain, or lecture about any place or point of public interest to any person in connection with any sightseeing trip or tour within New York City?" I just passed the NYC Sightseeing Guide Exam to renew my license - I even got the fabled star for high marks!
Guests from Australia, Finland and the United Kingdom having a terrific time visiting local businesses and sampling chocolate beer in Williamsburg.
Williamsburg remains an outlet for artistic expression. Contributors to the neighborhood's street art scene include local and international artists, community organizations like El Puente, and the multicultural Williamsburg Art & Historical Center (WAH). Even businesses like Colossal Media get into the act. Their (way cool) artists build anticipation with mammoth hand painted murals that brighten otherwise desolate wallspace.
On a spectacular day in Red Hook guests were enthralled by Tony Cuonzo's garden of Golden Anvil Sculptures. Tony arrived to the United States from Italy and made Bensonhurst (my old neighborhood) his home. When I was growing up I would never have imagined that guests from across the USA would make their destination Brooklyn. And yet people like Tony have been doing so for generations.
Did you know that Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn was NYC's first municipal airport? Today aircraft are lovingly restored and recreated there in meticulous detail by volunteers with the Historic Aircraft Restoration Project (HARP). Learn about historic flights, aircraft design, manufacture and restoration. Highly recommended!
Thank you to those who voted for my little business. While I haven't heard from FedEx yet, considering all the positive waves I've been getting from everyone I am hopeful!
What began as Brooklyn Flint Glass is Corning Inc. today. This year Corning celebrates the 150th anniversary of their move from Brooklyn to Corning, NY. Did you know that Corning made Thomas Edison's first light bulbs? That your smartphone screen is probably made of Corning's Gorilla Glass? That they pioneered the manufacture of fiber optic cables? Now Corning employs 45,000 people - many right here in New York.
“Williamsburg is more like four neighbourhoods each with its own unique character,” says Dom Gervasi, who leads Made in Brooklyn Tours. “Walking south to north, you’ll see the 19th century institutional buildings of the gritty southside, which appeals to wabi-sabi enthusiasts, and the nouveau riche of the northside as evidenced by Mac Zone, Whole Foods, and the like.” His guests, hailing from Australia to Scandinavia, are especially taken with local fashion and design.
